Dantean Staircase, 2013
A performance at Richard Wentworth's Black
Maria, London. Objects and layers of costumes
are shed while ascending the stairs, echoing Dante's
Pilgrim being purged of sins while climbing the Mount
of Purgatory. The objects - pomegranates, apples,
books, grapes - bounce back down the stairs. Duration
five minutes. Photographs by Adam Papaphilippopoulos.
A sacrament for the new season, 2013
A companion work to Towards the ecstasy of
May, this performance at the Horse Hospital,
London, celebrates the coming of spring. Using a head
torch, a large scroll of photocopied images, the
sound of breathing and a rudimentary costume, the
work reinterprets the traditional ritual marriage of
the Green Man and the May Queen. Duration ten
minutes. Photographs by Adam Papaphilippopoulos.
Towards the ecstasy of May, 2013
A performance made at Dorchester Abbey, Oxfordshire.
The audience is led on a torch-lit procession to a
carving of the Green Man (a pagan figure appearing in
many churches). On arrival the woman leading them
appears transfixed by his face. Her breathing builds
to a climax, when confetti, petals and mini eggs fall
from her dress. She then disappears through a door
under the Green Man, leaving the audience to indulge
in an impromptu communal feast of chocolate gathered
from the altar steps. Duration fifteen minutes.
